Converting from a petroleum-based infrastructure to a CNG-based infrastructure requires a clear vision and a commitment, both strategic and financial. Capital is needed for vehicle-conversion and fueling facility construction, as well as training technicians, updating maintenance facilities, and fuel tank storage, to name a few. Fortunately, many government and private grants are available to help you fund your CNG conversion project, and adopt this cost-effective, sustainable, and environmentally friendly fuel. Following is a brief overview of some Federal grant programs designed to help municipalities and private entities make the transition to CNG.

• Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program. Administered by the FHA, the QMAC program has awarded hundreds of millions of dollars in grants to municipalities and state governments to help boost compliance with the Clean Air Act. Funding is allowed for private partners of state and local governments as well.

• Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act. In 2012, Congress passed an act that allocated over $100 billion to help cities transition their public transit systems to CNG vehicles.

• Clean Cities Program. This program awards grants to states seeking funding to decrease petroleum use. Funding can be used to purchase or transition vehicles to CNG, to build CNG fuel stations for private and public use, and to partner with private organizations for decreased petroleum dependence.  Clean Cities organizations can be found across the country.  ET Environmental is a proud member of the Wisconsin Clean Cities organization which now boasts more than 400 CNG fueling stations in the state.

In addition to Federal grant programs, private sector funding is often available, so be sure to thoroughly research your local grant foundations.
