Have you ever heard of National Biodiesel day? As alternative fuels continue to grow, it may be more important than you think! National Biodiesel Day is celebrated on March 18th, the birthday of Rudolf Diesel who was born in 1858 in Paris, France. Rudolf Diesel is famous for inventing the diesel engine in 1897, which originally ran on peanut oil. The massive engine was said to be approximately 3 meters high, weighing in at an astounding 4.5 tons. According to Science Direct, Diesel delivered an insightful message in a 1912 speech when he stated, “The use of vegetable oils for engine fuels may seem insignificant today, but such oils may become, in the course of time, as important as petroleum and the coal-tar products of the present time.” Biodiesel is an alternative to diesel that can be made from animal fat, vegetable oil, recycled cooking oil, or soybean oil. It is helping our environment by being a cleaner-burning, petroleum-free diesel alternative. Biodiesel has many benefits including the creation of green jobs and reducing U.S. dependence on imported petroleum. Celebrate National Biodiesel Day by learning about biodiesel, how it continues to evolve, and ways you can implement biodiesel in your everyday life.
